American Beetles
Additions & Corrections (updated: April 3, 2006)
The 2 volume set of American Beetles was produced to help others identify and learn about North American beetles. This is the consolidated work of over 60 specialists in the Coleopterists Society that replaces the classic "The Beetles of the United States (A Manual for Identification)" by the late R. H. Arnett, Jr. Copies of American Beetles are available from CRC Press. Inquire about a Coleopterists Society member discount.
Any project of this magnitude has errors, plus, our knowledge of these taxa changes daily. The following pages are devoted to additions, corrections, or updates to these books. Please note, the accuracy and currentness of the information here is limited to what has been presented by authorities on a group. Notifying us of inaccuracies is left to these authorities. If you wish to have corrections, additions, or updates considered for posting on this page please contact Paul Skelley (skellep(AT)doacs.state.fl.us).
Corrections to these chapters will be items relevant to the accuracy and usefulness of the books. For various reasons, there are many different "styles" presented in the chapters. Items considered to be variations of style or formatting will not be posted.
Additions and updates will be limited to published data. This site will not present unpublished views or unaccepted concepts. Additions and updates will be brief notes with a citation to the published work.
VOLUME 1 - General Introduction and Families 1-22.
Arnett, R.H., Jr., and M.C. Thomas. (eds.). 2000. AMERICAN BEETLES. Volume 1. Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga, Polyphaga: Staphyliniformia. CRC Press LLC, Boca Raton, FL. xvi + 443 pp.
Notice: Volume 1 has been variably cited as being published in either 2000 or 2001. The Library of Congress CIP information presents the date as 2000, yet the copyright is cited as 2001. The CRC Press website states the publication date as December 28, 2000. Thus, 2000 is the correct year to use when citing this work. – Thanks to Christopher Majka for alerting us of this concern.
- First Printing - Additions and Corrections
. Look on page iv, the Copyright page, second line from the bottom. If it reads "Printed in the United States of America 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0", noting the number 1 is present, then it is the first printing and you should consult these errata. It is recommended that you check corrections listed for the second printing.
- Second Printing - Additions and Corrections
. Errata submitted by authors in the Spring of 2001, which were intended to be included as an "Errata" section of Volume 2, have been incorporated into a second printing of Volume 1. Corrections for the second printing were made by the printer, thus the second printing will have fewer corrections. Look on page iv, the Copyright page, second line from the bottom. If it reads "Printed in the United States of America 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0", noting the 1 is missing, then you have the second (or subsequent) printing with many errata corrected. You should consult these errata.
VOLUME 2 - Families 23-131 and Key to Families.
