Kyle Whorrall Graduate Student Travel Award

The Coleopterists Society invites graduate student members of The Coleopterists Society to submit a proposal for the Kyle Whorrall Graduate Student Travel Award.

Eligibility

The applicant must be:

  1. Currently enrolled as a graduate student in good standing at a recognized academic institution.
  2. A member in good standing of The Coleopterists Society.
  3. Accepted to present a nearly completed project with at least preliminary results at an official national or international in person conference.

Eligible applicants may receive one Kyle Whorrall Graduate Student Travel Award during the course of their degree.

Allowed Requests

Applications will be considered for travel costs associated with attending in person and presenting beetle research at an official conference where an abstract has been submitted and presentation has been approved. The request can include (but is not limited to): meeting registration, airfare, accommodations, and meals. The Coleopterists Society will provide award recipients with travel funding only (all official/legal permissions and/or visas for travel are the responsibility of the student). Applicants are encouraged to use this award in conjunction with any travel funds available through their institution, supervisor, or other resources (an asset but not a requirement).

Award

Four awards will be granted each year (two for each due date) for 500 USD each. The proposed meeting must be attended while enrolled as a graduate student or in the same calendar year as the thesis/dissertation defense. The awardees are required to give a 10-minute version of their presentation during the online Annual General Meeting of The Coleopterists Society.

Applications

Include (single-spaced 12-point Times font, 1-inch margins):

  1. Abstract submitted and approved to be presented at an official national or international conference.
  2. A letter from the student’s faculty advisor confirming the enrollment of the student in a graduate program and discussing the state of completion of the work to be presented at the conference.
  3. Confirmation that the student accepts responsibility for determining and acquiring all necessary permissions/visas for travel, if needed.
